SAPS Login Not Working? 6 Fixes for the E-Recruitment Portal
You're typing in the right password, you're sure of it — and the SAPS login still won't let you in. Take a breath. Nine times out of ten, a failed SAPS e-recruitment login comes down to one of a handful of fixable things. This guide runs through them in the order you should try them.
First: are you on the right site?
Most "login not working" reports start here. The saps e-recruitment portal lives at erecruitment.saps.gov.za. The main site, www.saps.gov.za, doesn't have an applicant login at all — if you're trying to sign in there, nothing will happen no matter how correct your password is. Still confused about which is which? Our portal comparison spells out what each site does.
Fix 1: check the basics
It sounds obvious, but it fixes more logins than anything else. Make sure Caps Lock is off, you're typing the email address or ID number you actually registered with (not a different one), and there are no extra spaces before or after. If you registered with your ID number as the username, don't try your email — and vice versa. Try typing the password into a notes app first so you can see it, then copy-paste it in.
Fix 2: reset your password properly
If the basics check out, use the "Forgot password" link on the e-recruitment portal. The reset email can take a few minutes to arrive — and check your spam or junk folder, because automated SAPS emails land there more often than you'd think. When you set the new password, pick something you haven't used on the portal before, and save it somewhere safe this time.
One catch: the reset link only works if you're resetting the account that actually exists. If you registered with a Gmail address but you're requesting the reset for your Yahoo address, you'll wait forever. Think back to which email you used when you first created the account — that detail matters more than people realize.
Fix 3: the portal might just be busy
Right now SAPS is running a massive intake — 5,500 trainee posts (ref TRA26/27) with applications closing 13 November 2026. The previous intake drew over a million applications, and traffic spikes crush the e-recruitment portal, especially in the evenings and on weekends. If the page won't load, times out, or throws errors, it's probably not you — it's the server.
What helps: try early in the morning or late at night, when fewer people are online. Switch from your phone to a computer if you can — the portal behaves better on a desktop browser. And avoid the final two or three days before the closing date entirely if possible; that's when the portal is at its worst and when panicked applicants make the most mistakes.
Fix 4: clear the browser gremlins
Old cached data causes more login weirdness than people expect. Clear your browser's cache and cookies for the SAPS site, or open an incognito/private window and try logging in there. If it works in incognito, your regular browser was the problem. Also try a different browser entirely — if Chrome fails, try Firefox or Edge. Disable any VPN while you're at it; some portal security checks don't like unexpected locations.
Fix 5: your account might not exist yet
Here's a common one: people try to log in before they've ever registered. The e-recruitment portal needs you to create an account first — there's no automatic account just because you want to apply. If you've never gone through registration, there's nothing to log in to yet. Our e-recruitment registration walkthrough takes you through the whole signup, step by step, so you can get it right the first time.
Fix 6: ID number mismatches
The portal validates your South African ID number. If you typed a digit wrong during registration, your account exists under the wrong ID and your real one won't log in. Double-check the ID number on your profile against your actual ID document. If registration itself rejected your ID, make sure you're entering all 13 digits with no spaces.
When none of that works
If you've tried everything above across two different browsers and the portal still won't cooperate, give it 24 hours — portal outages during big intakes do get resolved. For account-specific problems that only SAPS can fix, your options are the contact details published on the official www.saps.gov.za site or a visit to your nearest station. What you should not do: pay anyone who promises to "fix" your login or "fast-track" your application. The application is free, logins are free, and anyone charging for either is scamming you.
And if you haven't started yet, skip the frustration entirely — start from the homepage for the full map of the SAPS portals, or jump straight to the registration walkthrough.
